What AI answers about data center space can't tell you

Ask ChatGPT or Claude where to put your servers and you'll get a real shortlist. You won't get a current answer. Most of these answers end the same way: go get quotes and compare them.

What an AI answer actually gives you#

A decent starting list. On September 14, 2026 we checked how ChatGPT and Claude answer real data center questions across four cities. Mid-size and regional providers showed up in every city answer, not just the biggest names.

The list is built from what's written down: provider websites, directory listings and press. It shows who publishes well, not who has space. In about a third of the answers, the AI said so itself and told the buyer to go collect three to five quotes.

Why the answer stops there#

  • It's recall, not a live check. An AI repeats what's published about a market. That's useful for getting oriented. It can't tell you what's true today.
  • Nobody publishes availability. Whether a provider has space in a building is only answered by asking them, and the answer changes fast.
  • "Get a few quotes" is right, but it's homework. The AI can't send your project to every provider that fits and bring the bids back.

What no AI answer can tell you: who has space, today#

Space in existing data centers is scarce in most cities. Openings still happen. A tenant moves out, and the space usually goes to someone already in the building.

You miss those openings if you ask once and move on. A capacity report, a call to one provider and an AI answer all have the same flaw. The old way of buying data center space makes the full case.

Does AI only recommend Equinix and Digital Realty for data center space?#

Can AI tell me which data center providers have space right now?#
