The big four are where you start, not where you stop#
The big four are strong providers, and they're a useful yardstick. Knowing what they offer shows you what everyone else is competing against. That's the point of this page: they make the other 125 visible.
For 2 to 20 racks, the best fit is often a mid-size or regional provider. They compete hardest for that size of deal, and in smaller cities they're often the only carrier-neutral option. Our bid guide explains who to invite.
Why a short list costs you more than it used to#
Most new space turns up inside existing buildings, when a tenant leaves. North American vacancy hit a record low in the second half of 2025. Watch four providers and you see four providers' worth of openings.
Watch the whole market and you see far more. The old way of buying data center space makes the full case.
Providers you may not know, city by city#
Every provider below runs a real building in the city named. They come from the same verified directory behind our metro guides.
Phoenix#
Csquare, Flexential, Evocative, Iron Mountain and Expedient all run Phoenix buildings. Evocative's is the biggest single building in our Phoenix directory. Phoenix guide.
Dallas–Fort Worth#
DataBank, TierPoint, Cologix, Evocative, Flexential and 365 Data Centers span downtown, Richardson, Plano, Allen and Fort Worth. DataBank's Plano building holds FedRAMP Moderate. Dallas guide.
Los Angeles#
Evocative and DataBank win on cost when you don't need downtown: a South Bay or Orange County project, or a backup site. Los Angeles guide.
Northern Virginia#
Csquare, CoreSite (Reston), Iron Mountain (Manassas) and 365 Data Centers (Herndon) all run buildings here. This is the one city where the big names earn their place most often. Northern Virginia guide.

When a big name is the right call#
Sometimes the big four are exactly right. Put them in your bid when:
- You need the most network choice in one place. Equinix's Ashburn campus is its biggest in the Americas, and nothing smaller replaces it.
- You need one contract across many cities or continents. That's what the biggest providers are built for.
- You need several megawatts together. CyrusOne's Chandler campus and Digital Realty's big buildings are made for it.
How to widen your list without guessing#
- Start with your city. Read the guide for where you're buying, past the first name.
- Check the exact town. "Dallas" and "Ashburn" each cover several towns thirty miles apart.
- Bid everyone at once. Put the big four and the mid-size providers in the same round. When they all know they can lose, you get their best number.
