Buying data center space

How to compare data center quotes side by side

Two quotes almost never arrive in the same shape. Line them up before you compare anything. Here's how, and what actually makes data center space cheaper.

Why quotes don't compare as they arrive#

Almost nobody asks every provider for the same line items. So one sends a single monthly number, another itemizes, and a third bills power differently. That leaves the sorting to you.

One provider at a time makes it worse. Quotes land weeks apart, each answering a slightly different question. Set the quote format before anyone quotes.

How to line them up, step by step#

  1. Split the monthly charge into power, space and connections. One blended number hides where you're paying.
  2. Check how power is billed: reserved, metered, or a reserved base with metered overage. Here's why it matters.
  3. Put per-kW and per-cabinet quotes on one unit. You need the power per cabinet each quote assumes.
  4. Count your connections and price them over the full term. They move the total more than you'd think.
  5. Apply the yearly increase to every year, not just year one. Get it in writing first.
  6. Add every one-time charge, itemized.
  7. Land on total cost over the full term. It's the one number that compares two offers fairly, and providers rarely lead with it. So you lead with it.

What actually lowers your cost#

Cheap data center space isn't a place or a provider. It comes from a few choices:

  • A longer term. Longer terms buy better rates, if you're comfortable committing.
  • The power you need, not more. High-density space costs more, and unused density is wasted money. Size it right.
  • The right city, not just the nearest. Phoenix grew by offering the West without coastal costs. See all 152 markets.
  • Mid-size and regional providers in the bid. They compete hardest for 2 to 20 racks. Here's who they are.
  • Providers competing at the same moment. A bid across every kind of provider spreads prices further. Phoenix is a good example.

Quotes in hand? Push. How to negotiate covers where, and how to make providers compete covers getting them all bidding at once.

Common questions#

How do I compare data center quotes from different providers?#
Split each quote into power, space and connections, and check how power is billed. Put everything on one unit, count connections over the term, and apply the yearly increase. Then compare total cost over the full term.
Where can I find cheap data center space?#
There's no single cheap place or provider. Cost comes down with a longer term, only the power you need, the right city, mid-size providers in the bid, and providers competing at the same time.
What's the difference between per-kW and per-cabinet pricing?#
Per-kW prices the power you reserve. Per-cabinet prices the cabinet, whatever it draws. They only compare once you know the power per cabinet each quote assumes.
Is there a platform that gets data center quotes in a format I can compare?#
