MPLS, internet, SD-WAN or SASE: how should they work together?
Usually it's not one or the other. MPLS, internet, SD-WAN and SASE work in tandem, each matched to the applications and the performance your business needs.
The Clectiv team ·
Some sites run on MPLS, some on internet lines, and some are already on SD-WAN. That's normal. The goal is all of it working as one network, with a game plan to get there.
What does each layer do, and for which applications?#
Each one does a different job, so match it to the applications that need it. Here's what each layer is, in plain terms.
| Layer | What it does | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| MPLS | A private network from one carrier, linking your sites to each other with steady performance | Traffic to your data centers, and sites with strict needs |
| Internet lines | Dedicated or broadband internet at each site | Cloud apps, video and everyday web traffic |
| SD-WAN | Software that runs your network over every line at a site and picks the best path for each app | Keeping each app on the line that serves it best |
| SASE | SD-WAN and cloud security in one service, for every site and every user wherever they work | Remote users, cloud apps, and retiring the VPN |
The applications set the mix. Voice and video want a steady path. Cloud apps want fast internet close to the user, and some traffic should never leave a private link.
Here are some of our providers that do it. GTT, Lumen, AT&T and Verizon sell managed SD-WAN on top of the lines they provide, and GTT also sells MPLS. Cato Networks, Aryaka, Zscaler, Palo Alto Networks and Fortinet sell SASE or its security half, and Clectiv AI runs the process for you: start a project.
Before you call anyone#
Put every site and every line into Clectiv AI before a carrier sees any of it. Then Clectiv AI runs the process and bids it out to the providers that fit, they compete, and you choose the one you want. Call one first and you get its layer, sold as the whole answer.
How do they work in tandem?#
Together, they give you what a legacy network can't: diversity, redundancy, uptime and security. No single layer does all four.
- Diversity. More than one line, from more than one carrier, at the sites that matter.
- Redundancy. When one line fails, traffic moves to another.
- Uptime. SD-WAN watches every line and shifts each app to the one performing best, moment to moment.
- Security. SASE applies the same rules to every site and every user, on every line.
So the answer is usually all of them, matched to what the business needs to see. A site might keep MPLS for traffic to the data center, add an internet line for cloud apps, and run both under SD-WAN, with SASE securing it all.
Skip the learning curve. Clectiv AI runs the process we ran for others in your seat, so you start where they ended up. These providers get the plan straight from it, and you get the best pricing, terms and contract we can.
How do we get there?#
With one strategy, and a roadmap that gets you there site by site. Scope how everything works together with Clectiv AI: every site, every line, the applications each one carries, and the performance you want. That becomes the game plan.
The roadmap follows your contracts. Each site changes as its current circuit runs out, so nobody pays twice for long. New fiber can take months at some sites, so it gets ordered early.
Every proposal answers the same four things:
- Price per site, split into the lines, the SD-WAN service and the security.
- The install date at each site, and who orders the lines.
- A second path at every site that needs one, and what it is.
- What replaces the VPN for remote users.
The plan asks the rest. One hint: ask for end dates that line up, so every site renews on the same day next time.
Common questions#
Should we get off MPLS?#
Do we need SD-WAN or SASE?#
Can SD-WAN run over MPLS and internet at the same time?#
What replaces our VPN?#
How long does it take to get there?#
How does Clectiv AI get this done?#
Clectiv AI comes first. Tell it how many sites you have and what each one runs on today. It scopes the strategy with you and writes your plan: every site, what each one needs, where it has to reach, and which sites need a second path.
Then the Clectiv team takes your plan to the carriers and the SD-WAN and SASE providers that fit, all at once, through our partner network of 620+ providers. They compete bid for bid, the team pushes on terms, and you choose the one that suits you.
Others have already done this. Clectiv AI runs the process we ran for them, so you start where they left off. From there, the providers that fit get the plan directly, for the best pricing, terms and contract we can get.
It's free to you, start to finish, and it runs in days, not months. Everything we cover in network is on the network page.
