Agentic AI in the contact center: what's real and what's a demo?
What's real is an AI agent that finishes a routine contact inside your own systems, on your data, with a person one step away. Anything else is a demo.
The Clectiv team ·
"Agentic" means the AI does the job, not just the talking. It looks up the account, makes the change and confirms it, then hands off to a person when it should. If a provider can't show you that on your data, you're watching a demo.
What makes an AI agent "agentic"?#
An AI agent is agentic when it finishes a routine contact inside your systems, using your data, with a person one step away. Answering a question isn't enough. The AI also has to do the work the contact is about: look up the account, make the change, confirm it to the customer.
| Kind | What it does | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Answers questions | Replies from a script or a knowledge base | A clean knowledge base |
| Helps your agents | Suggests answers and writes notes while a person handles the contact | The live conversation and your knowledge base |
| Finishes the contact (agentic) | Takes the steps itself: looks up the account, makes the change, confirms it | Access to your systems, rules for what it may do, and a handoff |
"Agentic" is a marketing word, so use a test instead. Can it finish a real contact, in your systems, on your data, with a person to catch what it can't? If any part is missing, it's something else.
Before you call anyone#
Tell Clectiv AI which contact you want finished, and in which systems, before anyone shows you a demo. Clectiv AI runs the process from there: the providers that fit get it as a bid, they compete for it, and you choose. Call one first and you see its best demo, on its own sample data.
How do we tell a real deployment from a demo?#
Ask four questions. A deployment has an answer to every one. A demo often has a good answer to the first and a pause after the rest.
- Whose systems? A demo runs in a sandbox, a test copy with made-up data. A real deployment runs against a live order system, live account records and your policies.
- Whose data? Sample conversations are tidy. Real ones have accents, typos and half-answers.
- What happens when it's wrong? A real deployment has a rule for when to stop, and a log of what it did.
- Who takes over? The person should see the whole conversation, so the customer never repeats themselves.
Write the test with Clectiv AI: the contact, the systems, the handoff. Then the providers that fit are tested on the same one.
The plan asks for a pilot on a slice of your own contacts. A provider that won't run one has answered the question.
What should a proposal prove before we sign?#
It should prove the AI finishes a named contact, not that it sounds good. Four things belong in every proposal:
- A named contact type, finished end to end in your systems.
- The handoff: the moment the AI passes the contact on, who gets it, and what they see.
- Your numbers: results counted your way.
- The limits: what the AI won't do, and what it needs from you, such as system access and a clean knowledge base.
The plan asks the rest, from security review to what happens when one of your systems changes. One hint: tie the next phase to the pilot's numbers, so a miss doesn't commit you.
PolyAI, Kore.ai, SoundHound AI, Yellow.ai and boost.ai sell AI agents of their own. Five9, Genesys, Talkdesk, NICE and Sprinklr sell contact center platforms with AI agents.
Those are some of our contact center providers for this, and Clectiv AI runs the process with them for you: start a project.
Here's the thing: this has been done before. Clectiv AI runs the process we've run for buyers like you, so you start where they ended up. From there the plan goes straight to these providers, for the best pricing, terms and contract we can get.
Who sells it isn't proof it works for you. What each one can do on your contacts is what the proposal has to show.

How does Clectiv AI get this done?#
It starts in Clectiv AI. Tell it which contacts you want an AI agent to finish and which systems they touch. It scopes the project with you and writes your plan: agents, channels, what the AI should take, what your people keep, and what has to plug in.
Then the Clectiv team takes your plan to the AI-agent and contact center providers that fit, all at once, through our partner network of 620+ providers. They put in bids and compete for the work, the team pushes on terms with each, and you choose the winner.
Plenty of companies have stood where you are. Clectiv AI runs the process we've run for companies like yours, so you start where they finished. The plan goes straight to the providers that fit for the best pricing, terms and contract we can get on each.
It stays free to you, and it takes days, not months. The rest of what we source in contact center is on the contact center page.

Provider names are examples of who sells AI agents and contact center platforms with AI agents, from Clectiv's provider directory and its provider notes, not a ranking, and not a claim about what any one product does.
